Creating a morning routine grounded in biblical principles can set a positive tone for your day. Here’s a suggested routine along with verses to inspire each step.
- WAKE UP EARLY AND PRAY
Verse: “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly.” (Psalm 5:3)
Start your day by waking up early and spending quiet time in prayer. This helps you center your thoughts and invite God’s presence into your day.
2. READ SCRIPTURE
Verse: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Take time to read the Bible. My favorite way is to choose a structured study that keeps me on track and intentional about what I’m reading rather than opening the bible to a random page. Having structure, even if it’s a loose structure helps understand time, context, facts, and application. God’s Word provides guidance and wisdom for your daily life, so starting your day in God’s Word reminds you who you are glorifying throughout your day.
3. PRACTICE GRATITUDE
Verse: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
Spend time reflecting on what you’re grateful for. Be thankful and show that the day is full of blessings, not burdens. Children are whining – a blessing to remind them of our savior’s commandments to have self-control in all we do including in how we speak. Clothes piling up – a reminder of God’s provision through the clothes you get to fold. This practice helps to cultivate a positive mindset, recognize God’s blessings, and see His hand throughout the day.
4. PLAN YOUR DAY
Verse: “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance, but everyone who is hasty comes only to poverty.” (Proverbs 21:5)
Take a minute to outline your goals and tasks for the day. I like to set my top 3 priorities of tasks that need to happen. Then the following goals are more of a bonus if you’re able to accomplish them. A clear plan helps to stay focused and organized, allowing you to manage your time effectively and avoid idleness.
5. EXERCISE OR STRETCH
Verse: “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.” (1 Timothy 4:8)
Incorporating some physical activity, whether it’s stretching, yoga, or a workout is important and aligns with the principle of honoring God with your health, but it should be the last thing you implement when trying to start a structured routine. Planning time with God and being intentional about your relationship with Him is the most important aspect of your mourning routine. However, we also see that God’s word tells us physical training is beneficial. We see science catch up to this principle when we look at all the benefits of working out. We know it helps clear minds, lower blood sugar, regulate stress hormones, and much more.
6. EAT A NOURISHING BREAKFAST
Verse: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Prepare a healthy breakfast that fuels your body. Eating well honors the body God has given you and also energizes you throughout your day. It also is a good time to remember the blessings He’s given us in the food he has provided. Food not only dictates our energy levels but also becomes part of our cells. It becomes a part of who we are and guides our health for years to come if we stay consistent.
CONCLUSION
A morning routine grounded in prayer, scripture, gratitude, and intentionality can transform your day. By incorporating these biblical principles, you not only prepare for the tasks ahead but also align your heart and mind with God’s purpose for you. Embrace each morning as a fresh start and an opportunity to seek His will!
If all this seems intimidating, I get it. We hear all the time the 5-hour long morning routine, do ‘this’ do ‘that’, make sure it’s in this order, etc. While I think a structured morning routine is important, I think there are more practical ways to start implementing these principles one small step at a time.
Here are some free guides to help you navigate implementing these in different ways over different timespans so that they can best fit your lifestyle!
